Citroen Berlingo Review

May 19th, 2023

The Citroen Berlingo at a glance

Citroen might be best known for their highly popular car range, but their legacy is also marked by their valuable contributions to the commercial vehicle sector. What is arguably Citroen’s most popular van, the Berlingo has sold millions of units since it first debuted on the market in 1996. Now in its third generation, the Berlingo is packed full of great safety features and all of the technology you would expect from a premium-quality small commercial van. As a result, this is a vehicle suited to a wide variety of commercial applications, especially for tradespeople who require a practical van that can efficiently get them from A to B and carry a sizeable load.

To find out more about what the Citroen Berlingo has to offer, as well which industries it is best suited to, keep reading.

Engines and Spec

Despite being the smallest of Citroen’s van range, the Berlingo makes up for this by having big features. Performance and efficiency are the name of the game, with the van’s lighter platform and advanced engine technology to thank for this.

Interestingly, the Berlingo is available with a choice of a petrol, diesel or electric motor.  For the petrol option, there is a PureTech 110hp Stop&Start with a 6-speed manual gearbox. If you’d rather opt for a diesel, there is a choice of four distinct BlueHDi engines. Horsepower ranges from 75-130, and can also feature either a 6-speed manual gearbox or an automatic option with an 8-speed gearbox. Lastly, there is the e-Berlingo: a van that is 100% more economical than its combustion counterparts. The electric variant is the perfect versatile vehicle for professionals and tradespeople who typically work in urban environments and want to avoid congestion or emission charges. Despite their technical differences, however, all of these efficient engines prioritise driving comfort and dynamic handling, as well as fuel-efficiency.

The Berlingo is available in three different trims: Worker, Enterprise and Driver. Each trim is designed with its own unique benefits. The Worker is ideal for professionals who spend a lot of their working life transporting around heavy materials on difficult terrain. The Enterprise offers various storage options with a highly connected system. Lastly, the range-topping Driver is more refined and excels in city environments. There are also two body lengths available, with the longer model capable of fitting an extra row of seats – perfect for transporting a sizable crew.

Interior

Inside, the Berlingo is functional and versatile. Its boxy shape creates an excellent boot and cabin space for drivers and passengers. A comfortable and spacious cab can be quickly transformed into a mobile office if necessary. The Berlingo was also one of the first small vans to add more seats and windows than standard – a feature that other manufacturers were quick to replicate. This creates an almost car-like feel, making the Berlingo appealing to a wide range of drivers.

Storage-wise, you will find a large glove box, deep cubbies and numerous other handy compartments for storing everyday essentials. A payload of up to 1000kg means that professionals of all kinds won’t have to worry about transporting heavy items around despite the Berlingo’s small size; wide rear and side doors also offer plenty of accessibility for loading and unloading awkwardly-shaped items.
